Why Iodine (I) is Essential

Iodine is one of the most critical and rapidly depleted trace elements in a closed reef system, impacting nearly every inhabitant.

• Coral Health & Color: Iodine is vital for the formation of blue and violet pigments. A deficiency leads to a "washed-out" appearance and weakens the tissue of species like Xenia and Zoanthus.

• Infection Resistance: Proper iodine levels decrease the susceptibility of corals to bacterial infections and parasites.

• Invertebrate Molting: Shrimps and crabs require iodine to synthesize the molting hormone ecdysteroid. Insufficient levels lead to failed molts or death.

• Fish Metabolism: Necessary for thyroid function in fish; a deficiency can lead to significant metabolic issues.

• Common Causes of Deficiency: Rapid biological consumption in brightly lit tanks, as well as removal via protein skimming, activated carbon, ozone, and UV sterilization. Because iodine is highly volatile, regular balancing is essential.

• Standard Dosage: 1 ml per 100 liters (26 gal) increases the iodine content by 10 µg/l.
