Why Selenium (Se) is Essential

Selenium is a critical trace element that acts as a primary defense mechanism for corals, particularly in high-performance reef systems with intense lighting.

• Oxidative Stress Protection: Selenium is a fundamental component of various proteins (selenoproteins) that protect coral tissue from oxidative stress. This is vital when corals are exposed to high light levels, as it prevents the buildup of harmful reactive oxygen species.

• Light Tolerance: If selenium levels are too low, this internal protection is compromised, leading to a significantly reduced light tolerance and potential tissue damage under standard high-output reef lighting.
