Why Barium (Ba) is Essential

Barium is a trace element that, while needed in small amounts, is crucial for the biological development and structural integrity of many reef inhabitants.

  • Skeletal Formation: Barium is directly involved in the calcification process; low levels can have a negative impact on overall coral growth and skeleton formation.

  • Coloration: Deficiencies often manifest as bleaching or noticeably weaker coloration in both LPS and SPS corals.

  • Soft Coral Health: Essential for proper tissue formation and vitality in soft coral species.

  • Common Causes of Deficiency: Most frequently caused by low concentrations in standard salt mixes and an insufficient trace element supply to keep up with coral consumption.

  • Standard Dosage: 1 ml per 100 liters (26 gal) increases the barium content by 1 µg/l.

  • Safe Limits: Increase barium by a maximum of 10 µg/l (10 ml per 100 liters) per day.
