Why Iron (Fe) is Essential

Iron is a fundamental trace element that acts as a catalyst for numerous biological and metabolic processes within a marine ecosystem.

• Photosynthesis & Color: Iron is critical for photosynthetic performance. A deficiency results in reduced color depth and stunted growth in both corals and macroalgae.

• Refugium Health: It is essential for the vitality of macroalgae (such as Chaetomorpha); a deficiency often leads to a complete growth stop in the refugium.

• Metabolic Support: Iron is a core component of many enzymes and cellular metabolic processes that keep reef inhabitants healthy.

• Common Causes of Deficiency: High consumption in systems with intense LED lighting, high SPS loads, or thriving refugiums. Furthermore, iron precipitates rapidly in saltwater, meaning even systems with low consumption often require targeted supplementation.

• Standard Dosage: 1 ml per 100 liters (26 gal) increases the iron content by 4 µg/l.
