Why Strontium (Sr) is Essential

Strontium is a major trace element in natural seawater and is chemically similar to calcium. It is fundamentally involved in the calcification processes of many reef organisms.

• Skeletal Development: Strontium is incorporated directly into the aragonite structure of stony corals alongside calcium. It acts as a structural "reinforcement," helping to build dense and strong skeletons.

• Coral Resilience: Adequate strontium levels prevent coral skeletons from becoming brittle. Fragile skeletons are more susceptible to damage from high water flow or handling.

• Coralline Algae & Invertebrates: Beyond stony corals, strontium is vital for the development of coralline algae and the shell formation of invertebrates like clams and snails.

• Common Causes of Deficiency: Rapid consumption by fast-growing SPS/LPS corals and coralline algae. Many two-part dosing systems or budget salt mixes may not provide sufficient strontium to keep up with high-demand reef systems.
